First, head to chat.theargo.social. This is our own hosted version of the Cinny client equipped with a few custom features tailored for our community. You are completely free to use any Matrix client you prefer, but these instructions specifically cover our provided webapp.
Installation & Initialization
Register with your desired username. Your username acts as your handle on the decentralized network. For example, registering the username test-warbler will create an account named @test-warbler:theargo.space.
Next, click on the gear/user icon to head to your User Settings. Under the Account tab, you can set your Display Name and upload an Avatar to establish your identity on the ship.
Go to the Devices section in settings. You MUST enable device verification and back up your encryption key. You will be prompted to set up a passphrase. This is optional, but acts as a highly recommended and memorable alternative if you lose your raw key.
You will now be shown your master Recovery Key. Download it, copy it, and write it down somewhere safe. You will need this if you ever log into a new client (like your phone) and don't have another currently logged-in device nearby to approve the connection.
Once this is complete, your settings will update to show that your current client is Verified and your encryption backup is connected.
You are now securely connected. To find your crewmates, open the Explore Community tab on the left sidebar to view featured spaces. Click to join "The Argo", or manually add #main:theargo.space to your joined spaces.
Matrix is different from Discord, in that rooms can be part of spaces, and spaces can be part of spaces. This allows us to more granularly control who can get into what spaces. Similar to other platforms than Discord, you are NOT in all channels by default. Go ahead and join both the Information and Ghost Lounge (OOC) spaces, as well as all the channels you want to be a member of.
Many rooms throughout Matrix offer emotes as packs. We have our own channel, #emotes:theargo.space, with a few to get you started.
Under your User Settings, in the Emojis & Stickers tab, you can choose which packs to select and enable. This makes them available all over Matrix to you, rather than just the specific room/space they were uploaded in.
Troubleshooting
If you ever find yourself logging in on a new device or browser and you see an "Unverified Device" shield icon, your messages will be unreadable. Navigate to your Device settings and select "Verify Manually". Input your saved Recovery Key to instantly restore your encrypted message history.
If your client is stuck spinning at joining, this is common when joining a big external channel, but for us, is more likely a bug being fixed soon. Go to your settings, About, and click "Clear Cache". You'll often find you actually joined successfully.
